Monroeville
There’s plenty to know and love about Monroeville—not only is this “Literary Capital” of the state the home of famed authors Harper Lee and Truman Capote, it’s also Alabama’s first “Great American Main Street!” One could argue the progress and renown this town and its Main Street program have experienced over the last decade is equally impressive.
Located in the bucolic Red Hills of Alabama, Monroeville has a storied past. This is certainly evident in its iconic spaces like the Monroe County Courthouse Museum, a National Historic Landmark, as well as its stops along the Alabama Civil Rights Trail.
Even today, the community enjoys hosting year-round visitors and generational residents who experience the vibrant, authentic small businesses that dot the square. Many love to walk the town and revel in its incredible art installments celebrating the history and culture found there.
But Monroeville Main Street’s events are also not to be missed! Third Thursday is a much-anticipated event with extended hours and specials. The 8th Annual Procrastinators Party is held each December in conjunction with the event. The annual Paint the Town Point Out is another event locals and visitors are excited to experience, particularly since it’s held jointly with the Monroeville Literary Festival and the many art, retail and literary events encompassed within it.
Not surprisingly, the community’s appeal is also fostered by the many projects, programs and other event partnerships of its Main Street organization. The annual BOOK IT is a 5K and costume contest with many other elements that create a buzz. However, the Monroeville Main Street’s annual Farm to Table Dinner serves as the program’s largest fundraiser helping to further its mission, including projects, an entrepreneurial program, small box shop and much more.
Several transformative projects are coming up, as well, including important infrastructure work throughout the community, ADA accessible improvements, any other key public/private partnerships.
