DIRECTOR OF COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENTJob Responsibilities:
The Director of Community Development for the Mississippi Main Street Association (MMSA) is responsible for coordinating and supervising all member organizations and working with each community on their program service needs. This person shall serve as the liaison between MMSA and member communities. The Director of Community Development will also ensure that each member community is compliant with MMSA policies and procedures as set forth by the National Main Street Center and the MMSA Board of Directors.
Duties include:

Direct oversight of all program services for MMSA member communities. Provide resource teams and technical services upon request by community and as funds are available.

Coordinate with Staff and contractors as needed to plan and execute services which may include, but are not limited to, strategic planning, board and director trainings, on-site design services, community marketing and promotion, market analysis, program and event development, historic preservation, etc.

Work with State Coordinator to develop and execute a budget for technical services.

Create and maintain a weekly work log of all technical services that is shared with the Staff
for communication purposes.

Oversee MMSA community evaluations. Develop a format for final reporting and
contingency plans for communities that fail certification.

Work closely with MMSA Board of Directors, Staff, and local directors to evaluate ongoing
training and technical service needs.

Work with the MMSA Board of Directors, Staff, and third party contractors to communicate,
promote, and support all MMSA fundraising programs to the local communities, directors,
and board members.

Oversee return on investment data collection. Work with the State Coordinator to refresh
and update our return on investment data collection and analysis process.

Work with the State Coordinator to research, write, and administer government and
foundation grants and programs for MMSA.

Coordinate all Mississippi Vision Planning charrettes and all Refresh visits in member
communities, including contract agreements with third party contractors.

Work with Director of Communication & Marketing to develop trainings geared to the level
(and topic) needed for MMSA Communities (beginner, intermediate and advanced).

Work with state, regional and local partner organizations to provide the best services to our
members and further extend our resources and services.

Speak at conferences and solicit new communities to become members.

Perform other duties as assigned by the MMSA Board of Directors.

Required Skills and Experience:
Bachelor’s Degree and at least 10 years of community-based development experience preferred with increasing responsibilities. Demonstrated success in motivating a team. Excellent interpersonal, written and verbal skills. Ability to work with a diverse group of people – staff, Board of Directors, local program directors, business and organization leaders, and other partners to further MMSA’s mission. Leadership skills to maximize results. Excellent decision-making, priority setting and organizational skills. Ability to prepare plans and reports. Ability to present oneself in a convincing and professional manner and to inspire and generate enthusiasm in directors and staff. Highly self-motivated and excellent judgment. Excellent follow through and attention to detail. Positive attitude and the ability to work as a team member. Ability to prioritize multiple projects and work within time parameter. Ability to work occasional evenings and weekends. A strong commitment to and ability to communicate the goals and mission of Mississippi Main Street Association.
With 50+ Statewide Communities under the MMSA umbrella, this position shall require weekly travel, possibly multiple days at a time, and therefore requires a commitment to responsible scheduling and coordination with member communities. A central location is preferred due to extensive state-wide travel demands. Excellent travel and full paid employee benefits are available.
