Marion
Located in the Alabama Black Belt, historic Marion’s roots run deep, and Marion is recognized as playing an important role in the Civil Rights Movement. Significant connections and events here led to the Selma to Montgomery March and the passage of the Voters Rights Act of 1965.
Undeniably, Marion’s people are the driving force behind its valued Main Street designation and progress seen across the area. Poised for economic growth in agriculture, forestry and tourism and situated between three major metropolitan areas—Tuscaloosa, Birmingham and Montgomery—Marion is a small town simply waiting to be discovered. And as the seat of Perry County, this community’s revitalization efforts have sparked a movement to reinvigorate the heart of its community and Main Street district: the historic downtown square.
Known as the site of the start of six Alabama college institutions, this town earned the nickname “College City.” Marion has historically been the cornerstone of education in Alabama. In fact, the town is the historic home of Lincoln Normal School, a historic African-American school with graduates like Coretta Scott King and other Civil Rights leaders.
As you can imagine, visitors enjoy discovering Main Street Marion through its distinct culture, rich history, unique architecture and unparalleled natural resources. Through several museums, recreational outlets—like the Swamp Fox Trail—and other venues, including the Marion Art Center, residents and visitors are given opportunities to enjoy everything from Antebellum architecture to Civil Rights landmarks.
But no place is complete without a local hot spot to eat, drink and shop. Well, Marion has you covered with faves like southern comfort food eatery Lottie’s, or how about Diane’s Diner, both on Washington Street. College City Drugs and Hilltop General Store are two other community staples, along with many more local favorites.
