Main Street Project Grants Awarded to Calera and Wetumpka
Apr 5th, 2024
In December 2023, the first two recipients of the Main Street Alabama Project Grants were announced: Calera Main Street and Main Street Wetumpka. These grants, offering up to $25,000 each, aim to support designated communities in executing projects within their districts to stimulate positive economic growth.
Calera is utilizing its grant to assist in the transformation of an alley leading to Calera's Courtyard, situated behind downtown establishments. The Courtyard, already a hub for events, is part of a $3 million initiative, with the City of Calera having invested $1 million in the plan and an additional $1.6 million committed through FY2024.
Calera Main Street's Alley Activation Plan involves upgrading the alley with pavers, replacing gravel, and introducing landscaping and seating. These enhancements, coupled with a new entertainment district designation, are poised to make the Courtyard a vibrant daily destination, attracting new retail and dining establishments. For more details on this endeavor, please contact Jackie Batson, Executive Director of Calera Main Street, at jackie@downtowncalera.org.
Meanwhile, Wetumpka is embarking on a project to revitalize an underutilized area, creating a communal space to appreciate and learn about the geological significance of the Fall Line. The Fall Line Overlook design not only aims to provide educational value but also addresses drainage issues by redirecting rainwater to the river bank.
This public improvement initiative has been in the works for over a year, with Main Street Wetumpka successfully raising over $58,000, including a $25,000 grant from the Alabama Power Foundation. Additionally, the City is contributing in-kind drainage work valued at $27,500.
With a commitment to bolstering the local economy, Main Street Wetumpka anticipates that this project will breathe new life into an underutilized area, driving increased foot traffic to the district and fostering economic vitality for local businesses. Furthermore, the Fall Line Overlook will seamlessly integrate with the existing Tulotoma Snail Trail.
