Main Street Alabama selects three new downtowns

Jun 8th, 2015

A program focused on downtown development announced three more Alabama downtowns had been selected for revitalization projects.

Main Street Alabama on Monday announced its three new Designated Main Street communities. These are Elba, Fort Payne and Jasper, according to a release from the organization.

The three newly selected communities will be tasked with revitalizing their downtown areas by incorporating a specific four-point approach from Main Street Alabama that will focus on organization, promotion, design and economic restructuring.

Alabama cities that have followed Main Street Alabama development plans include Alexander City, Anniston, Athens, Birmingham, Decatur, Dothan, Gadsden, Eufaula, Florence, Monroeville, Opelika, Oxford and Selma.

"Main Street Alabama is thrilled to begin work in these newly designated communities," said Mary Helmer, state coordinator of Main Street Alabama in a written statement. "Each selected community understands that its downtown is the soul of their community and want to develop a better quality of life for its citizens."

Main Street Alabama announces downtown projects annually, with the next round of applications starting in the Spring of 2016.
