Birmingham, Ala. (Jan. 27, 2025) — Main Street Alabama recently announced the opening of its Network Community application window, which will begin on February 1 and will remain open for the entire month.
The Network is an introductory level for communities who would like to have a more vibrant historic downtown or neighborhood business district and are interested in learning more about the Main Street Approach®. Communities at this level will receive assistance from Main Street Alabama on organizing a public/private partnership to share their desire for an improved district and start essential discussions regarding preliminary investment. Interested communities may apply in February by completing a brief application on the organization’s website.
Although only Designated Communities are eligible to use the trademarked Main Street brand, there are many benefits to becoming part of The Network. Notification of all statewide Main Street Alabama webinars, workshops, and conferences—along with a Network Discount—will be provided to all Network communities. Main Street Alabama also provides an annual onsite presentation to introduce its multi-pronged approach, as well as access to its staff as a resource. Finally, if or when the community chooses to pursue Designation, Main Street Alabama will answer questions regarding the application and its associated process.
Currently, there are 26 Network communities throughout the state. According to Mary Helmer Wirth, Main Street Alabama president and state coordinator, “If you are a community just starting a downtown revitalization program, our Network is for you. This is a great opportunity for those looking to connect and attend training on the redevelopment process but not yet ready to seek in-depth services.”
Between 2014 and 2023, Main Street Alabama reported an overall impact of over $1 billion, including $603.7 million in building improvements, $227.4 million in property purchases, and $175.9 million in total public investments. To access the Network application form, click the link below.
