Demopolis
Located in the heart of Alabama's Black Belt region, downtown Demopolis is a hidden gem waiting to be discovered. With its rich history, vibrant community, and variety of local businesses, this Main Street community offers a unique experience that appeals to both residents and visitors.
First settled in 1817 by a group of French expatriates, Demopolis, known then as the Vine and Olive Colony, is one of the oldest continuous settlements in Alabama. Exiled Bonapartists seeking refuge after the fall of Napoleon’s empire settled on the bluffs of the Tombigbee River with the hopes of growing grapes and olives. While their efforts were ultimately unsuccessful, the scattered olive trees that still bear fruit as well as French street names offer a strong connection to its past.
Downtown Demopolis is centered around the charming Public Square, established in 1819. This park is not only one of Alabama's oldest but also serves as a gathering place for the community. Throughout the year, it hosts events like Christmas on the River, Rooster Day, and the local Farmers Market—bringing people together in celebration.
Local businesses play a vital role in making this historic downtown a lively place. vThe Mustard Seed offers unique gifts and home decor, while The Social Butterfly is full of antiques and local art. Nancy & Co. Fine Jewelers offers exquisite jewelry, and The Bargain Box provides thrift store finds while supporting a good cause. The Bigbee Humane Society Thrift Store, Culpepper Electric Company, The Bistro, and Kingdom Grounds are also local favorites.
History enthusiasts can visit the Marengo County History & Archives Museum or visit historic homes like Bluff Hall and Lyon Hall with Canebrake Craft Corner nearby.
Throughout the year, Demopolis hosts a range of beloved events like Christmas on the River or Rooster Day—a unique event that honors the 1919 Rooster Auction and featuring a Cock's Crow 5k, Rooster Fair, and live entertainment. The Demopolis Farmers Market is also a must, offering fresh, local produce and artisanal goods.
For pet lovers, Bark in the Park is an annual event that brings dogs and their owners to the Public Square for a day of fun, live music, and a pup pageant. Additionally, Rumble on the River offers thrilling boat races and entertainment at the Demopolis City Landing on Lake Demopolis.
Outdoor enthusiasts will find plenty of recreational opportunities in the district. The Demopolis City Landing or the Demopolis River Walk—overlooking the Tombigbee River—are great spots for birdwatching and enjoying nature.
Main Street Demopolis, established in 2022, has been working hard to make its downtown the heart of the community again. With many exciting revitalization initiatives planned, its history, shopping, and outdoor adventures makes Demopolis the perfect place to find something for everyone!
